M-Stat, M-Dash & M-Alert

Project Description

The Medical School strategic reporting system comprises three parts:

• M-Stat, which makes available information about space allocations, faculty appointments and compensation, research submissions, expenditures and awards, clinical activity and more.
• M-Dash, an application that knits together the information from M-Stat and turns it into easy to understand and useful charts, graphs and projections.
• M-Alert, a system which sends e-mails to users when selected numbers fall above or below certain levels.

Project Purpose, Scope, & Deliverables

• Obtain a better understanding of metrics currently in use to manage various units in the Medical School.
• Identify value drivers.
• Determine Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and benchmarks.
• Ensure consistency with the strategic vision of the Office of the Executive Vice-President for Medical Affairs and the Medical School Office of the Dean.
• Create a dashboard to facilitate an accessible shared understanding of organizational direction.

Business Need

• Bring together in one virtual place a comprehensive database of information.
• Provide real-time information to facilitate data-driven decision making.
• Allow users to customize management information.
• Provide the user with the ability to perform "what if" scenarios.

System/Application & Data Sources

Xcelsius data visualization software is used with data obtained from the Medical School Data Warehouse (IDX, MS Grants), from various data sets in the U-M Data Warehouse (General Ledger, Human Resource, Space Management, PRISM, Student Records and Development Alumni/Constituent and from National Institute of Health resources.
