If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Vinita Bahl (vbahl@umich.edu).
The Patient Safety Indicator – Case Review System (PSI-CRS) enables identification of inpatients who acquired a medical condition after hospital admission. It sends information about each patient to clinicians who analyze the condition and determine if the problem was preventable. The PSI-CRS enables UMHS to take corrective action and improve patient safety.
The system uses data that are a by-product of the Hospital billing process. These data include codes of patient diagnoses, some which describe complications of care. To identify potential patient-safety events, UMHS applies to this data a set of algorithms which are part of the Patient Safety Indicators developed by the U.S. Health & Human Services, Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ).

Note: The PSI-CRS has the potential for commercial development and licensing to other acute care hospitals.
UMHS has pilot-tested the Patient Safety Indicator – Case Review System, and it plans to implement the system across U-M inpatient facilities for use by UMHS faculty and staff who are involved in clinical care and quality improvement.
